STATHAKION CENTER 22-51 29TH St., Astoria, NY 11105
To University Professors,
Representatives of Greek American Associations and Organizations,
And Individuals,
Dear Sir or Madam:
Preamble
The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York is completing 70 years from its inception in 2008 as a preeminent organization. Historically speaking, it is known as the largest community organization in the Diaspora with a membership of over 150 active and energetic societies, of which 100 are regional Greek societies with a proud record of achievements. These societies have had a history and tradition for over a century and are responsible for preserving our national and religious identity and traditions alive, handing over the reins from generation to generation, to the 21st century.
The important and agonizing question for everyone of us living in this hospitable land – and country for many of us- is weather we will be able, with the same vigor, the same passion and the same love for the ideals of Hellenism and biomes of our faith in Orthodoxy, to pass the torch on to our children and the future generations. The developments around us advance rapidly, especially in this date and time, and in this country of great geo-strategic and determinative importance, that plays a major role in the international political arena. From these developments, the significant and universal realization is one; the melting pot that is globalization will continue to progress.
The response to this distressing ascertainment is provident action. A knowledgeable call for action. The launching of a debate. A pervasive cogitation. A common meeting of minds. A common examination of the immense issues that consume us as an ethnic community. An official attestation and transcription of our problems. A proposal for detailed solutions. The problems are numerous, common and scalding (!) and they concern us all. These problems should unite us. For initiatives like this, we all have to be united. Momentous actions should unite us!
Therefore, with the opportunity of the celebration for the 70 years of the Federation, the Executive Board of the Federation, initially on January 9th 2007 and later consistently, in various special deliberations, along with other related celebratory events, decided unanimously to organize a Convention whose theme will be:
